Who We Are
Grave Belles is a small press dedicated to raising female & non-binary voices in horror, focused on dark storytelling and building community.
Our Story
History hasn’t been kind to marginalized people. We have seen how those in power restrict women and other individuals who don't conform to rigid societal expectations.
Voices are silenced.
History is distorted to forget their stories.
The injustice of this–important varied experiences being intentionally excluded from the historical record, filtered through religious doctrine or a pen held in the hand of a man–was the catalyst for our first anthology from Grave Belles Press.
This isn’t just happening historically; it continues today. More than half the horror section of almost every bookstore is Stephen King or other male writers. It was discouraging to see so few female and non-binary voices take up space on those bookshelves. Art, whether written or visual, is meant to convey the complexity of our human experiences, and we see so many being left out of these spaces. How can one group of people tell the varied stories of others, especially when that group’s privilege imparts a crucial bit of leverage to their very existence? The short answer is they can’t.
So, we decided to do something about it.
Pull up a chair and grab a drink, or maybe a knife — whatever makes you feel safe. The female and non-binary authors found in the pages of our stories do more than just scare you… they take your heart and squeeze it tight, leaving you confronting dark truths within yourself and those around you.

Meet The Belles
Amanda Havill Adgate
Amanda Havill Adgate (she/her) is a writer and therapist whose work explores the dark intersections of trauma, memory, and the supernatural. With a background in mental health and a passion for gothic storytelling, Amanda weaves narratives that are both emotionally resonant and hauntingly atmospheric. Her fiction often centers on women navigating grief, isolation, and inherited horror, drawing inspiration from folklore, cult psychology, and feminist theory. She has published short horror stories in multiple anthologies and works with Kristin Dwyer on Breaking The Story retreats. She’s also a member of the Horror Writers Association. Amanda lives near the Appalachian Mountains with her feral children and the love of her life, where she balances writing with wild, wonder-filled chaos. Find her on instagram @a.simple.verse.
Jess Ferguson
Julia Jackson (she/her) survived a near‑fatal car accident and turned to writing as part of her recovery. She now crafts chilling stories that strip away the masks women wear. She has undergone more surgeries than Frankenstein, prowls the night like Batman, and conjures unforgettable heroes and monsters of her own. Julia independently published Powder & Poison in October 2025. Her work appears in multiple international horror anthologies, and the Horror Writers Association selected her poetry for inclusion in their 2025 annual juried collection. Julia teaches mindful writing at Kristin Dwyer’s Breaking the Story Retreat and when she isn’t writing, works in corporate communications and watches an arguably unhealthy amount of ghost‑hunting shows and horror movies.
